NC School Calendar History

In 2004, the North Carolina General Assembly took school calendar authority away from the state's local school districts.

Today local school districts are required to follow inflexible mandates on when the school year can start and end. They are the only public educational entity required to follow such restrictions.

The current calendar law says that calendar flexibility is good enough for public charter school students and families but not good enough for their traditional public school neighbors.

Lawmakers need to make #nccalflex a priority in 2019!

#H375 or #H389 were two important school calendar flex bills from the 2017-18 session.

School districts are being forced to schedule makeup days on weekends and holidays. Is this disruption fair to NC families with students in traditional public schools? Make your voice heard! #saveourholidays #savespringbreak   #nccalflex #familiesmatter

If calendar flexibility is good enough for charter school families, it is good enough for traditional public school families! #faircalendars

A legislative research division released a report on findings & recommendations on the school calendar law.

Thanks to a rigid and inflexible State school calendar law, first semester exams in high schools are pushed off until mid to late January while many community colleges have already started their second semesters.

Is this good for students? Is this good for families? Is this good for educators?  Ask lawmakers to support calendar flexibility!
